Glauchau train station

1

The Glauchau train station, opened on April 30, 1926, dominates Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße as a solitary structure and forms the gateway to the city for rail passengers. From a transport and local history perspective, the station building is significant as a passenger station and freight transshipment point on the Dresden–Zwickau and Glauchau–Wurzen railway lines. Due to its design as a unique building type in the Reform style, the station building holds architectural historical importance.

The complex consists of the imposing waiting hall, the low-rise extensions along the hall's long sides, the former waiting areas for first to fourth grade, and the adjoining residential and administrative buildings. The gable facade of the plastered building, with its slate-covered hipped roof, clock tower, and wide projecting canopy, is particularly striking. The vertical lines are emphasized by large, segmented, tall rectangular windows and porphyry surrounds.

Due to multiple alterations and limited maintenance resources, a comprehensive renovation was necessary. This renovation focused not only on functional reorganization, structural, building physics, and energy efficiency aspects, but also on a reinterpretation of the existing design.

The conservation objective for the facade was to preserve or reconstruct the plastered facade with its architecturally articulated porphyry stone elements and the original wooden windows, as well as to re-roof the building with slate.

Inside, the impressive waiting hall with its adjacent functional areas was the main focus of the new design approach, as it was also intended to allow use as a venue for markets, concerts and exhibitions.

4

The original lavish painting and decoration had been lost over time. Based on restoration findings, a color scheme reminiscent of the 1950s was designed, in keeping with the surviving light fixtures.

The floors were rebuilt and designed as homogeneous surface coverings in polished cast asphalt for the reception hall and terrazzo screed in the area of the former Mitropa restaurant and the functional areas. The color scheme emphasizes the architectural elements and creates a dignified atmosphere.
