KOSMOS Playground

1

In the mid-1960s, construction began on a large residential complex in the formerly agricultural district in the south of Frankfurt (Oder), consisting primarily of five-story buildings of the P2 type. The neighborhood was completed in 1972 and, reflecting the widespread enthusiasm for the emerging field of space travel, was named after famous cosmonauts. Even today, the names of Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space; Vladimir Komarov, the first human to die in space; Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space; and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, whose rocket research laid many of the foundations for modern space travel, can still be found there.

The term "Cosmonauts' Quarter" was coined during this period and became the starting point for the residents' identity and pride.

2

Some 50 years later, the Cosmonauts' Quarter has changed dramatically. Many apartment blocks have been demolished, others modernized, and at the same time, there is a risk of losing its identity. As part of a major redevelopment project at Juri-Gagarin-Ring 1-41 in Frankfurt (Oder), a new playground is being built for the entire residential area, addressing the theme of the location and aiming to counteract this.

3

In the heart of the district, elliptical areas are arranged along a meandering path, offering activities for all generations. The central area features a stylized lunar landscape, at the center of which a rocket with two moon shuttles has landed. This, along with a slide, trampolines, a swing, and a sandpit, provides a wide range of play opportunities.

4

The project was designed as an open process, centered around a participatory competition with children and young people. Many of their ideas were incorporated into the playground's design.

5

In the other areas, an activity course is being created that is designed to be inclusive, with a large barefoot path, as well as a streetball court and table tennis tables.
